May The Toys Be With You breaks all records at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum

Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum has welcomed record numbers of visitors to the current exhibition May The Toys Be With You. Since opening on 20 July almost 20,000 visitors have been to the Star Wars-themed exhibition, with fans of Star Wars and the silver screen flocking in from Worcester and further afield. Anyone who hasn’t yet visited the exhibition has just two weeks to catch it before it closes on Saturday 14 September.

The exhibition features one of the UK’s finest collections of vintage Star Wars toys and original cinema posters. The toys of Star Wars took the world by storm and became the must-have playthings for an entire generation. From 1977 to 1985 an estimated 300 million action figures were sold, allowing children to re-enact the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo.

Little kids and big kids alike have been enjoying the opportunity to view many rarely seen Star Wars treasures and take their own Star Wars selfie, enjoy hands-on activities in the Millennium Falcon cockpit and chill in the Death Star reading and soft play area as well as enjoying a number of special activity days in the school holidays. Many visitors have chosen to come in their own Star Wars costumes.

This touring exhibition has broken visitor attendance records at a host of museums around the country and Worcester is no exception, with July and August seeing record museum attendance.

Museums Worcestershire Marketing Manager Helen Large says: “The exhibition has been a resounding success, we are pleased that it has captured the imagination of so many people and it is great to be able to bring this exhibition to Worcester. We will be sorry to see it go in September, however, there’s always lots at the Art Gallery & Museum for families to do and see, even when C-3PO isn’t in the building!”

May The Toys Be With You is free and open Monday to Saturday 10.30am-4.30pm. The exhibition closes on Saturday 14 September.
